Valid foot traffic is a metric that measures the number of customers who genuinely intend to make a purchase at a store, after filtering out employees, shippers, and repeat visitors. In Vietnam, retail chains are shifting from counting raw foot traffic to measuring actual potential customers to optimize operations and increase conversion rates.
What is Valid Foot Traffic?

Valid foot traffic is the number of unique customers who genuinely intend to make a purchase and enter a store within a specific period, excluding employees, delivery shippers, or repeat visitors.
Unlike "raw foot traffic" — which counts everyone passing through the door — valid foot traffic only includes individuals with actual purchasing potential. The simple calculation formula is as follows:
- Valid Foot Traffic = Total Entries − Employee Entries/Exits − Delivery Shippers − Repeat Visitors
This metric helps retail chain owners answer the question: "How many people genuinely wanted to make a purchase at my store today?" instead of asking: "How many people walked through the door?"
